A gym was incorporated on the 56th floor of a residential building presenting several potential issues with regards impact and airborne sound transfer from dropping of large heavy weights, fixed resistance equipment with heavy weight stacks and of course the 'wacker' effect of treadmills. Relocating the gym to the first floor was no easy task, primarily because the building structure was composed of a steel tray and concrete base. To accommodate gym activity, the floor build-up would need to be enhanced to prevent noise and vibrations travelling through the building.

I see no reason why a number of acoustic test houses, gym design consultants and specialist fitness flooring companies cannot come together to develop standardised test methods for some of the common noise risks surrounding gym design and operation.
